July 4, Jeff and Nicole Rank went to hear George W. Bush speak in Charleston, West Virginia. Tickets in hand, they found seats ten or 15 rows from the stage. There they sat, quietly, wearing t-shirts that read love america, hate bush and regime change starts at home. Forty-five minutes before the president took the podium, event staffers approached the couple and said, "You need to either take those shirts off or leave." What I love about blogs are that they are NOT the mainstream media. They, that is the good ones, cover news that generally out of the main spin and are thusly a nice way to keep persepctive on the media.

Blogs (again I mean the quality ones) are also not part of campaigns. Granted they have bias, but they do not generally parrot the talking points of a candidates campaign.

This is why Hugh Hewitt fails as a blogger. I won't link to his site, because it sucks too much, but he does nothing but barf the BC04 spin. It adds nothing to the political process other than being just another outlet for BC04.

He championed the Swift Boat Verterns for Mung and is now all in a huff and puff about Mary Cheney.

I realize that this post also does nothing to further the political process and is just teenage piss and vinegar, but fuckass! I need to vent.

Now, you must all understand that the two things I hate the most in life are responsibility and accountability. So, this morning I decided that my dream job would be to work for the Bush administration. The New York Times is reporting today that Iraq has had no WMD since the 1990's. Cheney the other night dismissed a connection between 9/11 and Iraq, so now all of our major reasons for invading have been discredited. But has anyone in this administration gotten in trouble??

See? no accountability or responsibility at all in this administration. It would be great, I would wake up 1030 everyday, work really half-assed, say lewd things to the females....

Well, its actually true.

While viewers of NBC's "The Tonight Show" and CBS' "The Late Show" scored better than the general public, Stewart's fans came out on top.

Forty-nine percent of Leno and Letterman viewers got a perfect score on the quiz.

But 60 percent of "Daily Show" viewers answered all six questions correctly.

Just 42 percent of those who read a newspaper four days a week aced the test. Only 40 percent of those who watch network news four days a week got every answer right.

Comedy Central was waiting for news like this. On September 17, Stewart appeared on Bill O'Reilly's "The O'Reilly Factor" only to be told his viewers are "stoned slackers" and "dopey kids."

"You know what's really frightening?" O'Reilly asked Stewart. " You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary, but it's true."

Comedy Central used its viewers' test scores Tuesday to strike back at Fox News Channel and O'Reilly's viewers.

It also trotted out stats from Nielsen Media Research to show that Stewart's viewers are not only smart, but more educated than O'Reilly's.

"Daily Show" viewers are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education, while O'Reilly's audience is only 24 percent more likely to have that much schooling.

Plus, the network noted, "Daily Show" viewers are 26 percent more likely to have a household income more than $100,000, while O'Reilly's audience is only 11 percent more likely to make that much money.

So the guy watching Stewart may not only be smart, but may also be rich.

Thankfully the Mental Godzilla does not practice real journalism. If he did, then he would have to obey some journalistic ethics, just like all the people at Fox. Since this beast is not restrained by such foolishness, he is now reporting, based on a rumor heard from a friend at a bar, that on October 12, VPOTUS Cheney will leave the ticket. His new physician will declare him unfit. Bush will then tap McCain to be his running mate, just 3.5 weeks before the election.

The rumor apparently stems from someone who is related to McCain or some such. While I am n ot sure how much i believe it, cause McCain already turned Bush down in 2000, and he HATES Bush, it is probable since Bush knows he is floundering and that McCain is more loved than he is.

Basically if this does happen, the Mental Godzilla wants a fucking Emmy or shit. Remember you heard it here first.

Let's break this down a little more...

David Narcoss is the chief executive of the RNC. He is also a lobbyist for Raytheon. Because of his position with the RNC, Narcoss has access to all those in power in the current administration. Because of Narcoss' position with Raytheon, he makes money selling weaponry to the government.

Maybe this is why so much is being spent on RNC security...I bet Raytheon sells some good domestic defense gear...

Swift Vets for _____

Can we all agree that in a few years the Swift Vets for _____ ads are going to be looked back on in much the same way the Willie Horton ads are today. Really they're disgusting. The NYT has a long, but good piece today detailing how these people are crass political pawns. Definitely worth the read, even though it does take more than 30 sec to finish.

The new Swift Vets ad reveals a good deal about the group. The first one is full of distortions and things that cannot really be backed up. It left me wondering why these vets would come out against Kerry and say things that were easily refutable. The military obviously and rightly means a lot to these people, so why spew mung at a decorated vet. The new ad answers this: they're pissed about his opposition to the war afterwards.

The ad plays Kerry's speech to Congress when he was a young fellar. In particular, it plays the parts where he accuses American soldiers of committing atrocities. The fact of the matter, as sad as it may be, is that some US soldiers did do some awful thing: My Lai, for instance.

Kerry stood up and acknowlegded that the war was turning American youths into butchers by putting them in a awful hellish place. A place we had small reason to go to.

These Swift Vets felt betrayed by that. I am sorry they did, but Kerry was not accusing them in particular and by speaking out, he was trying to stop such butchery from becoming the future of other young Americans. To defeat an evil, you have to acknowledge it, even if it means looking in the mirror.

Kerry's service is not what anger these men; its what he did afterwards.

Below I stated that the failure to find WMD, Al Qaida connections, etc in Iraq mean that Bush was either lying in the run up to the war (that is he knew all along that none of that stuff was there but said it anyway) or that he has been relying on incompetent intelligence (and I will fault a commander in chief for starting a war on bad intelligence, just the same as I'll get pissed off at a friend who believes rumors, he had the moral obligation to ensure it was good info).

Bush's strategy though has been to insist that we would still go to war today knowing what we know now. He has to say that, otherwise he would be admitting a HUGE FUCKING mistake. Now his job is just to convince us that the mung he's forced down our throats is actually ambrosia and nectar. That's why now the sound bites are about ridding the world of a tyrant and killer, but we still ignore Sudan and now Congo.

So, mung is godsfood, and BC04 will do everything in its power to trash John Kerry like nothing we've seen before. If they get desperate come October, forget Anita Hill, Al Gore, and even Clinton(s), JK is going to get it like we ain't never seen before.

Which is why its sooooooooooo important for Kerry to stay on message and re-enforce the parts of what he says that the BC04 people spin, omit, and twist.

BC04 has to scare the American people into thinking that the absolute mung of their first term isn't as bad as what a KE04 victory would bring. The problem is they have little evidence to back that up. This is going to be bloodier than Mel Gibson's idea of Jesus.

This is funny. A new Bush attack/negative ad was supposed to wait until Monday to come out, but Fauxnews showed it a bit early. So now the KE04 is already fighting back, before the ad gets any wide spread circulation. (A side thought, wasn't W going to change the tone in Washington? I kinda feel like I remember that, but....)

Anyway the ad attacks Kerry for not caring about intelligence.

Noting the Democratic nominee's promise to reform the intelligence system, a narrator says: "Oh, really? As a member of the intelligence committee, Senator Kerry was absent for 76 percent of the committee's hearings. In the year after the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Kerry was absent for every single one.

"That same year," the ad says, "he proposed slashing America's intelligence budget by $6 billion. There's what Kerry says, and then there's what Kerry does."

The Mental Godzilla seems to remember Bush et al. having bigger problems with the intelligence whatnot of the USA. You see, Bush was sure, certain that Iraq had WMDs, connections with Al Qaeda, etc etc etc. But it turns out that was all wrong, as wrong as Bush was certain.

Hmmmmmmm.

I don't mean to accuse the POTUS of lying, but the anly alternative is that he's incompetant when it comes to intelligence. I know this stuff is difficult, hard, etc etc, but I expect more from a President before he sends our troops to fight and die.

Since then 7 men took over all of the wealth in Russia, their nick-name: The Oligarchs. Recently a few of these men became wanted by the law, one was even arrested. Suddenly, it was as though the Russian government had finally figured out what was up and pulled the wool off their eyes. Rather than being looted as they had in the past, the government tried to round up a few of these crooks for years of tax evasion; they even got one.

Today the US issued warnings to Russia about how they handle this case of tax evasion.

Did I mention that the guy they arrested was in charge of the country's largest oil exporter?

I feel as though our government gives the rest of the world the impression that we care about nothing but cheap oil. We'll wage war, get into your business, covert ops, you name it.

No, really, they do. See, they don't allow the major pharmaceutical companies to dictate how much life saving medicines should cost, so they get the good shit on the cheap. That's why states like Vermont, New Hampshire, and Illinois have attempted to buy their citizens Canadian drugs. It seems when GWB (or his henchmen in Congress) were pushing through the 500 billion dollar medicaid bill, they made it impossible for federal government to bargain with major pharmaceuticals for cheaper drugs. This may seem reasonable as long as no one tells you that all unions are able to use their membership size and purchasing power to receive discounts from these same drug providers. Now, why can the AFL-CIO bargain with MRK, BMS, PFE, IMCL, etc, but our federal government, with millions upon millions to distribute drugs to, cannot? Let's ask GWB, or better yet, vote for change.

Random musing on "activist judges"

All the hoopla the GOP has been making about activist judges and Senate Dems holding up Bush appointees (nevermind the GOP did teh same thing to Clinton) is actually a nifty strategy for combatting a President Kerry. In 2000 we heard about how important that election was due to potential Supreme Court nominations. Stevens, the uber-liberal of the Court, is aged, 80+ at this point, and Sandra Day O'Connor apparently wants to retire soon. Since none of the justices left the court yet in W's watch, and it would be impossible to confirm a new judge before the election, either President Kerry or second-term W will be able to nominate multiple judges for the court.

Hmmm, Mr. Keyes is a bit upset that Obama will not keep to the debate plan that had been worked out between Obama and Jack Ryan. Obama and Ryan had agreed to 6 debates of the "Lincoln-Douglas" type, and now Obama is saying that 3 debates is more likely. and Mr. Keyes response:

The US keeps loading up the fuel reserves

I have to hand it to Dick Cheney, the man knows how to make his friends money.

While the world's fears surrounding Yukos, terrorism, and the growing demand for fuel in India and China have driven up oil futures to 21 year highs, the US has been consistently adding to its fuel reserves. By continuing to buy oil at a price that many believe is too high suggests we are stocking up the reserves for reasons other than self preservation. It may be that we are helping the oil companies make a few extra dollars.

1) The oil companies are going to take the same cut of the revenue pie, no matter how inflated it becomes.

2)Massive additions to the US gasoline reserve drive up the price of oil by tipping investors off that we may have some info implying the costs will continue to skyrocket.

Now take point one and connect to point two. The more the US government continues to artifically add to the oil demand by stocking reserves, the higher the price of oil futures go, the more profits oil companies stand to make.

Now say next month the government decides to stop adding to the reserve,and gas prices start their magical descent just in time for the first tuesday in November. This may sound like conspiracy talk, but you probably thought that about MGs take on Sunday's Orange Party.

As an addition to the news from Yukos and Opec, in its weekly data the US Energy Information Agency said gasoline stocks rose 2.4 million barrels last week to 210 million barrels.
Analysts had expected stocks to fall 600,000 barrels due to peak summer demand from vacation drivers.

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Alan Keyes, yes the African-American conservative lunatic, who lives in Maryland, may pick up where Jack Ryan left off.

This would engage two African-Americans against each otehr for the seat, but aside from race, these two men have little in common.

Keyes, as you may remember, ran for the GOP presidential nod in 2000, and proved himself a firey speaker, and total fringe conservative.

The Ill GOP is really hitting rock bottom if it thinks this guy from a completely different state is the answer to their problems.

I expect Keyes will take the candidacy, just to put himself in the spotlight, and I predict that he will bomb it. Upstate, which is generally more liberal, will want nothing to do with him, and downstate, I hate to say it, still is rife with old-school confederacy style racism. He may be ultra-conservative, like much of southern Illinois, but that won't change the fact that his skin is dark.

...in respone to the most recent Newsweek polls released just today, the Department of Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge addressed the nation citing "new and unusually specific information" regarding the possibility of attack. The attacks could strike iconic financial buildings in New Jersey, NYC, and Washington, DC.

The Mental Godzilla is skeptical of this announcement, as it comes in the wake of the post-convention poll boost team "John John" received this morning and refers to the possibility of attacks on "iconic" buildings. Have we not been on the look out for attacks on iconic buildings for the better part of the last 3 years? I'm so glad GWB is taking homeland security seriously enough to use it against polls. God help us.

Some might say, "Wait MG, they have credible, specific information." Kinda like Iraq, right?

We took the Mental Godzilla out to the Fleet Center last night to see if it could find anything to destroy and it. Alas, the pickings were slim, as I hear they say. No protest warriors, http://www.protestwarrior.com, no conservatives at all really, aside from the Pro-Lifers, and oooh boy, man. The Pro-Lifers seem determined disgust Boston into the Republican Party, by driving trucks around the city, which have their sides covered in blown-up photos of partial-birth abortion fetuses. I don't know if I've ever seen anything so graphic displayed in public before.

The thing I do not understand about the pro-life movement is their single minded dedication to this one specific issue. Their end goal is just to save lives. No one has a problem with saving lives, but the majority of women in this country have a problem with banning abortion, thus abortion is a very divisive issue. Taking the legal steps as divisive as banniong abortion is very difficult, and probably will never happen. So why doesn't the Pro-Life movement throw all of its passionate support behind another issue that also has the end goal of saving lives, but will not be opposed by half of the electorate. If the Pro-lifers took up eradicating AIDS, re-starting the War on Poverty, etc etc etc, real progress could be made on those issues.

Anyway enough of that digression. The Mental Godzilla otherwise encountered a desolate "Free Speech Zone" that is behind the Fleet Center, well away from the politicians, delegates, and media. Man, I love being number one, especially when it involves putting crooks behind bars. NYTimes reports that we added 130,700 perps to the control of the criminal justice system this year, taking the number of incarcerated, paroled, or probationed Americans up to a whopping 6.9 million. Oddly enough, the actual crime rate has been rather steady for the past few years. Doesn't it seem strange that the crime rate stays the same, but we lock up more and more people each year? Thankfully we rehabilitate those who commit crimes in jail. Oh wait...

The 3.1 percent increase in the number of people on parole, the biggest in at least a decade, troubles many police and prosecutors, because they believe that newly released inmates are likely to return to a life of crime and are a major source of violence in some cities, including Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles.

After I got all C's through high school (I didn't but this is me talking through a persona for the post in order to make a point) I applied to college at some of the nest schools in the world, CalTech, MIT, Harvard, Oxford, La Sorbonne, Middlebury, Yale. And you know what? They all told me to go away because I was a bad HS student. To which I replied, "but I promise I'll work hard the next four years. Trust me, the next four will be different." And they still told me to go away.

Now the President really did get C's all through high school, and but he did get into those top notch schools, and then into Harvard Business School for his MBA. How'd he do it? I suspect throw a legacy, a bunch of money, and a promise "I won't screw around in college like I have before" at the admissions board and trot right in.

I think this would explain why in a speech in Iowa yester day he declared, "I want to be the peace president. The next four years will be peaceful years." Oh Barf. I want to say that I believe him, but I'm not sure if I can, he has no record, no credibility on the topic. Yes, invade Afghanistan, I will support that. But we never should have gone into Iraq. WMD? not there. participated in 9/11? nope. threat to US? not at all. ally to Al Qaeda? turns out that was Iraq's neighbor, oops. Why are we to trust that this man would give us peace for another 4 years? Baseball fans, remember this spring when the NL Central was a two team race between the Astros and the Cubs? HAHAHAAHHAHAHAH!!!!!! Now after the All-Star break the Cardinals have the best record in the Majors (fuck your Yankees, Eric), the Cards swept the Cubs in this past little 2 games series, including a comeback from 7-1 today, in which Pujols went 5 for 5 with 3 homers. So he is now second in the NL in HRs and Rolen still sits securley atop the MLB in RBIs. Meanwhile the Cubs are 10 games back and in third place, while the Astros are below .500, and are essentially out of any sort of race.

While the goal is admirable, and it is enlightening about a lot of things, it is not a very well made documentry. It sprawls, tries to fit in too much. Many of the scenes could have been cut down, and the examples shortened. Furthmore it does not flow well, it reminded me of a high school research paper, lots of info but composed randomly and when it ended I was sitting in my seat like, "Uh, okay, its over now..." It also has lots of cheesey sound effects and shots, major artisse.

But, the actual content is quite good, and interesting. Many interviews with CEOs, academics, workers, activests, etc etc. The CEO of Interface http://http://www.interfacesustainability.com/, the world's largest carpet maker, plays a large role. While letting the corporation "plunder" the Earthfor many years, he had an epiphany a few years ago. Since 1995 Interface has become sustainable in 1/3 of their actions, and are moving to total sustainability by 2025. That was heartening.

It also shows how absurd it is that corporations are legal persons. This removes the shareholders and executives from liability and responsibility, but creates a person who has a legal obligation to work towards ensuring profit above all else, responsibility, law, ethics.

I say check it out, but be prepared to wish it were over sooner.

The report Friday by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics said family life, education and health of America's children are generally improving... Teenage smoking has declined, as have teen birth rates.

These findings are great, and I'm glad to see this progress, but will it last when the same report tells us

child poverty has risen for the first time in a decade.

That little sentence makes me lose hope. Poverty is the source of many of the social ills plaguing our youth. I don't mean to say that rich kids and middle class never fuck up, but I think we can all agree that poverty is a trap, and escaping from it very difficult. That in turn leads to destructrive behavior.

But thankfully, the President has plans to keep helping the youth, even though they ignore the poverty issue,

Bush highlighted his proposals to spend $23 million for drug testing in schools and $25 million to encourage schools to develop curricula promoting good character.

Great, ignore poverty, drug test them (cause that builds respect and trust) instead of work on abuse prevention, and then try to build good character. Does he remember being a teenager? Want to piss them off and make sure they rebel? Then try to tell them how to live, and act, and think.

Oh, and he doesn't fund the No Child Act, but he can find the cash to drug test kids?

Or maybe this is all just PR to please the social conservatives. Why go for the root of the problem when you can more easily keep your base happy?

David Brooks' column for the NYT really sucks today. He babbles about KE04, and their values theme. For most of it he simply states nothing in far too many words, and then moves to the jist of his arguement.

When Kerry uses the word "values," it's meant to send a message: I am not who I am. I am not the blue-blooded prep-school kid who married two millionaires, dated a movie star and has a prenup and umpteen homes in tony locales; who has spent the past two decades as a moderately liberal senator from Massachusetts; and who likes to snowboard at Sun Valley and windsurf off Nantucket. I'm just your back-fence neighbor in Mayberry, out there in overalls, sidlin' over to the fence to chat: "Howdy neighbor! Would you like to come visit for a spell and hear about my values of faith, hope and opportunity?"

Right, and oh David, in case you forgot W is from an oil family, his father was president, and he's not really accomplished anything on his own in his entire life (not counting fuckign up a lot of stuff). Remember Arbusto, his drilling company? Yeah, that was a product of his wealth, and he failed at it.

At least the Senator has served in Vietnam, publically opposed Vietnam, worked as a prosecutor, served as the Lt Governor, and as a Senator. CNN has more Rumsfeld will resign gossip up. This stuff first started after the prison scandal, andI can't figure out why people are talking about it again (still?).

Really? that everything this administration does up to the election will be politically calculated, I concur. But I will be shocked if Rumsfeld gets dumped. He survived the worst of the media shitstorm at the start of the summer, Bush never fires anyone (O'Neil excepted of course), and for this "War President" to boot the Sec. of Defense before the election would be to admit the administration had fucked up what it's considering to be its greatest asset.

Also, Rumsfeld is a good buddy of Cheney's, and I can't possibly see Cheney letting his boy go anywhere (or Bigtime himself). Remember, in 2000 when Cheney was merely chairing the committee to pick Bush's VP, he came up with himself as the final answer. These two are here to stay.

Even thouh the world population has been rising at a pace that has even the most extreme anti-malthusian worried, the US has for the third year in a row withheld funding to the UN Population Fund. Although MentalGodzilla in no way advocates forced abortion, it seems the UN does not either. Once again the US is going against the word of the UN, and we all know how that turned out last time...
